Tether Theatre

A co-op game with a twist! Play with your partner tethered to you! Face off against another team of tethered threats and force them to collide with each other. Be careful, if you collide with your teammate, it’s game over.

Concept

The team always wanted to make a game where two players are tied together with a thread. The idea for each unit to have its own special abilities (faster or slower depending on size) came after realizing the game can be played with 2 players. Originally, both units shared the same ability and speed. We wanted the larger unit to hit hard but move slower while making the smaller unit move faster but not hit as hard, this was to give players variety and to give them a reason to choose one unit over the other.

Roles and Responsibilities

Tether Theatre was made with a team of 4. My role was to be the main artist and sound designer. The two playable tethered units were inspired by neon lights and batteries. Originally, the speedy units were also circles, but later changed into spiky stars to incentivize players not to collide with their own teammate. The music is a collection of upbeat, electronic tracks to support the game’s bright colours and chaotic gameplay.

Learning Outcome

The team behind Tether Theatre pushed for the game to be fun to watch and fun to play. It proved to be a successful approach as many eyes were drawn to the game’s catchy soundtrack and juicy gameplay visuals. Tether Theatre taught me that it’s worth putting in the extra effort into making your game look visually appealing and satisfying as it's bound to draw in an audience.
